The workshop will also involve a trip to study firsthand the work of Rubens in his own house and studio in Antwerp along with an excursion to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (If it is open at this time) to examine both Rubens and Hals masterworks. Models will be posing each day for both figure and costume work. The second week will emphasize portraiture in oils with a strong influence of Hals’ painterly style and “premier coup“ approach. The first week will feature Ruben’s Troi-crayon technique along with his distinctive chromatic use of oils with a particular focus on the figure and anatomy. Inspired by the exuberant manner of Peter Paul Rubens and Frans Hals, this class will study the materials, methods, and styles of two of the greatest 17th-century masters. This class will explore the methods and materials of this great Dutch master and apply them in the studio by creating portraits inspired by his impeccable grace and fluidity. His sublime approach signaled the beginning of alla prima painting and influenced some of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century such as Zorn, Sorolla, and Sargent. THE ROCHESTER ARTS CLUB, ROCHESTER, NEW YORKįRANS HALS: BIRTH OF OF THE PAINTERLY PORTRAITįrans Hals was the first portrait painter to merge rigorous naturalism with effortless and economical virtuosity. This workshop was intended to be in-person at The Art League, but due to the difficulties dealing with Covid, Rob decided to keep it online for now. The classroom is equipped with HEPA/UV-C air cleaners. Our current safety protocol requires Proof-of-Vaccination to attend this class. Model fees are extra and will be calculated on the first day of class. The final days will explore painting the portrait and costume in oils and include discussions on alla-prima paint handling and color. Special attention will be given to the various characteristics of fabric folds.

THE FIGURE IN MOTION WITH ROBERT LIBERACE TUTORIAL SERIES
Responding to the growing need for classical art instruction on those unable to travel, Liberace Studio has produced a series of tutorial dvds in which Rob demonstrates his techniques focusing on figure, portrait and anatomy.
For American Artist Magazine, he was asked to pioneer one of their first online teaching courses and taught regularly at their “Weekend with the Masters” workshops. Rob also teaches and demos regularly for The American Portrait Society. He regularly tours students through the great museums of Europe, garnering from his extensive knowledge of the old European masters and is a visiting instructor at The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, demonstrating old masters’ techniques. He teaches at The Art League of Virginia and holds workshops throughout the U.S. Rob is known for his inspiring and informative teaching style.
